Youth Religious Education (Pre Kindergarten – Grade 12)

St. Catherine's has Religious Education classes for students in grades pre-kindergarten through high school. Currently we have 60 students in our program. RE Classes meet on Sunday morning, with the exception of the high school program, which meets twice a month on Sunday nights. Classes are taught by parents along with Drake students. The schedule follows the Drake calendar for the school year.

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8:

The pre-k/kindergarten class (ages 4-5) meets during Mass, from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Grades 1 and 2 meet at St. Catherine's before Mass from 9:30 - 10:15. Grades 3 through 8/9 meet at Meredith Hall on the Drake Campus from 9:15 - 10:15.

High School Program

High school group meets twice a month, usually on the second and fourth Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The high school students often attend Saint Catherine student suppers on those evenings. During the school year, the high school students take on six separate service projects, including hosting a student supper and volunteering for the DMARC Food Pantry Soup Supper.
The high school program includes discussion on various spiritual topics after watching select movies/videos with moral and religious significance to the life of high school youth. Some topics addressed include morality and decision making, peer pressure, kindness and compassion, and serving others.

Service Projects

Service to our community and those in need is an important part of the ministry of Saint Catherine Drake Newman Center. Our RE program integrates a number of service projects into the schedule each year. For the 2009-2010 school year, we had classes hosting coffee and donuts after Mass and hosting student suppers on Sunday night. At Christmas time the students purchased gifts for students at Edmunds Elementary School, an inner city school. In April, the students built "KanCity" out of 1,000 donated canned goods that were then donated to the DMARC Food Pantry.

In years past, the students have raised funds for Conacaste, El Salvador to build a church destroyed in a 2005 earthquake. Students will participate with Saint Catherine Parish in 2010 school year in assisting the Conacaste School to get indoor plumbing for the 600 grade school children of Conacaste. Conacaste, El Salvador is the “sister parish” of Drake Newman Center.

Our RE school year has now ended for the 2009-2010 school year. The 2010-2011 year will begin on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010.

If you are new to the parish and would like to register your child, please contact Barb James at barbjames868@gmail.com.
